Lake Vanda bore
New Zealand drillers are| likely to begin setting up| their rig and equipment on ! surface ice in the centre of Lake Vanda in Antarctica’s' Wright Valley next week. | Once in position they will begin drilling their second hole of the summer—through the ice and water into the bed of the lake in what may turn out to be the most interesting borehole of the season. Since October 25 the New! Zealanders and their 16.0001 b. of equipment have virtually! been stranded at Marble Point, 55 miles from! McMurdo Station, waiting for! a helicopter to take them into the valley. It took them 21 hours using : three tracked vehicles to I cross the sea ice of McMurdo’ Sound to reach Marble Point for the helicopter uplift. Two twin-turbine helicop- \ ters were taken to McMurdo I Station on Tuesday in a | Military Airlift Command' Starlifter and the first was! test-flown on Wednesday. Thei helicopters are expected to! move the drillers to their new! site this week-end.
