Student interest in flats disappoints
Student interest in the University of Canterbury's first block of student flats had been very disappointing, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) said on Monday.
Professor Phillips told a meeting of the University of Canterbury council that only 60 students had applied for entry into the new flats which would be opened for students use next year. The flats are designed to cater for 144 students in three seperate four-storey blocks. Each block has two fiats a
floor with, six students accommodated in each flat. There is one common-room for each group of two flats. All previous surveys had indicated that there would be more interest in applying for entry to the new flats which would be used for the first ' time during the Commonwealth Games, Professor Phillips said.
“We hope that all the' [places will be taken up by! [1974,” he said. Referring to applications I [for entry to halls of rest-1 [dence serving the university ' : Professor Phillips said that there had been 633 applica-! tions for 456 places. Applications from female students had been noticeably: fewer than expected, he said. Golf.—M. Ozaki won the 33m. yen Tokai golf tournament with I a single-stroke victory over a fel!low Japanese, I. Aoki. L Trevino (United States) and Lu. ILiang-buan (Taiwan), share third place.
