Liquor decision deferred
A suggestion that sports dubs be required to get charters in cases where the consumption of alcohol on their premises was contemplated was deferred for a month by the Waimairi County Council last evening.
The council decided that it could not make any change in its town-planning ordinances, but it was suggested that a sub-committee could consider whether the council should make submissions to the Royal Commission on Licensing, as well as report to the council on the question of charters The decision followed further discussion of a petition I from Mr J. A. Olin and (others, arising from the proposals of the Marist Rugby (Football Club to build rooms !at Grimseys Road. The petitioners asked the council to ban licensed clubs in residential zones.
The town-planning committee reported that Cr W. T. Rice had said that the petitioners merely sought to differentiate between licensed clubs and sports clubs as they felt licensed clubs should not be allowed in residential zones.
I Cr F. J. Aitken said that if the council required that drinking be allowed at sports clubs only if they hold a charter, the Licensing Control Commission could set conditions. If the council wanted more liquor outlets, it should arrange to control them itself
and take the profits, said Cr Rice. Fendalton Road—Reporting that sealing of Fendalton Road between Harper Avenue and Holmwood Road had started, the County Engineer (Mr A. J. W. Lamb) said that the council was still negotiating for property on the Holmwood Road corner. Future work—Also in connection with Fendalton Road, the council decided to ask the National Reads Board for funds to buy property from Mr J. S. Pollard, 116 Fendalton Road, so that his frontage could be set back now. Work on widening this section may be as far as 10 years away. Traffic lights—A tender of $6091 was accepted for the
r installation of traffic lights at the Straven Road-Kilmarnock Street-Kahu Road intersec- ’ tion. Kerbing—An offer from the 1 University of Canterbury to r pay $2OOO towards the cost t of kerb, channel and footpath . along the university land on ; the west side of Ilam Road, was accepted. The council, which will find $7lO, agreed ■ to do the work before the > campus was used for the c Commonwealth Games. The I university does not pay rates. 5 Dropped—Told that the ’ Christchurch City Council ’ had dropped its plan to con- . tinue Rossall Street along I Wairarapa Terrace and Strowan Road and now wanted to extend Rossall Street only f to Heaton Street, the council ; agreed to the change.
