WORKS GO-SLOW THREAT
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 12. Freezing workers would go slow from November 1 unless they received the lull general wage order, a union official said today. The Meat Workers Union has formally asked the Meat Industry Employers Association for the full rise, to maintain its pay relationship with tradesmen in the industry. Last week the tradesmen were given the full 8.5 per cent increase. Employers have argued that under the Economic Stabilisation Regulations they are able to pay only 2.5 per cent of the 8.5 per cent order, because of the freezing workers’ 6 per cent increase earlier this year.
The employers association’s executive officer, (Mr J. Murray) today confirmed that he had received the union’s claim. “We can only say that we have applied the regulations in full,” said Mr Murray.
