50 men back from the Antarctic

Fifty men who have spent the winter in the Antarctic arrived in Christchurch last evening on the return journey of a Military Airlift Command Starlifter which yesterday morning made the first flight of the summer to Williams Field, McMurdo Sound.

Of the 50 men, all but 14, who will remain to augment staff at Christchurch Airport, will be on their way back to the United States by the end of the week. Yesterday’s flight to Williams Field carried 100 scientists and servicemen, and about 30001 b of mail. The heavily laden Starlifter took off at 9.06 a.m. and was on the runway at Williams Field

at 2.50 p.m. About two hours later, it was airborne again for Christchurch, where it arrived at 10.05 p.m. On tomorrow’s flight, a similar number of passengers and amount of mail will be carried, and 31 men will be brought back from the Antarctic.

The third flight of the week between Christchurch and the Antarctic will be on Saturday.
