Shipping lines raise freights

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, October 9. Freight rises and currency adjustments will be introduced to three of New Zealand’s most important overseas trades during the next two months, according to shipping sources.

More than a dozen shipping lines will change their freight charges as a result of the moves.

Ships trading between New Zealand and North American west coast ports will increase their south-bound freight charges about $9 a ton from November 15.

Ships sailing between New Zealand and North American east coast ports will also raise their charges about $9 a ton from November 1.

The new freight rate from North America to New Zealand includes currency adjustment factors, and a new tariff structure. This structure will apply on northbound rates once discussions have been completed between shipping company and New Zealand producer board representatives.

The container services provided by the Columbus Line, Farrell Line, Pacific Far East Line, and the Pace Line will all be affected. Some conventional services are also subject to new charges on both trades.

The New Zealand Eastern Shipping Committee, whose member lines include the Japan Line, Crusader Ship-

ping, Ltd, Mitsui Osk Lines, Royal Interocean Lines and the China Navigation Company will introduce a 12.9 per cent currency adjustment factor — costing New Zealand exporters more — for Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Philippines cargo on Monday. As well an adjustment factor of 14.7 per cent will be introduced to all other destinations served by its ships. The New Zealand European Shipping Association on November 1 will introduce a class rate system of grouping similar freighted commodities.

According to the association, the new system will be introduced at the same time as its 6.25 per cent freight increase becomes effective. The new tariff will list 33 separate items for each port or group of ports regularly served by association ships and is a rationalisation of the present commodity rates appearing in the north-bound freight tariff.
