Cricket council tribute to Mr J. G. Leggat
An eloquent and emotional: tribute to the late Mr J. G. i Leggat, formerly chairman of The board of control, was] made in the final presidential ] address'by Mr K. L. Sandford to the New Zealand Cricket Council last evening. While paying tribute to Mr: Leggat, who died on March] 19. Mr Sandford also spoke I highly of Mr W. A. Hadlee, | who succeeded Mr Leggat. : He also dwelt on the New I Zealand touring team in Eng-! land and mentioned particu-i larly the captain — “Congdon. the magnificent” — and! G. M. Turner, who scored more than 1000 runs before Ithe end of May. I “What a pity then, and not in the tests,” said Mr Sandford. “but he made them for I New Zealand.” Mr Sandford also recorded : that the administration of the game in New Zealand was being examined, and the state of the game, he said, "was on a wave: this wave will beat strongly against Australia.”
Finally, he said, “Crick? I has been the talking pom in New Zealand sport fo ! several months now. It ha: not been David Frost, Ger maine Greer or Keith Mur doch. The new president, Mr L. .1 iCastle (Wellington), paid par Ticular attention to the deci sion to play the tests again-. Australia on Sundays.
