Levy on surf clubs for S.A. tour?
Seven of the eight surf clubs in Canterbury are likely to be asked for about $l5O to send a Canterbury lifesaver to the world 'lifesaving congress in South Africa next year. The Canterbury Surf Lifesaving Association lias agreed to support an educational trip to South Africa and will financially support Mr R. Tremewan, of Spencer Park.
Mr Tremewan was one of several nominations that went forward to a selection panel to decide who the Canterbury candidate for the New Zealand team would be. The association will vote at its next meeting on a motion that Canterbury clubs pay an equal share of the cost of sending one delegate to South Africa. A motion was moved at the last meeting that the eight clubs be asked to nay but was followed by an amendment that the Pegasus club be excluded because of its financial position.
The chances of clubs not having to pay are slim, although one or two clubs have already voiced strong objections to the tour.
The South Brighton Club would have nothing to do witli the tour from a competitive or educational point of view, said Mr C. S. Rimmer. The association has still not appointed a secretary and the duties have been split until the position is filled. Mr G. J. Silvester gave notice of his retirement 12 months ago and there have been no nominations for the post. If none are forthcoming before the beginning of the next season consideration may be given to the appointment of a paid secretary. Championship carnival dates for the coming season are.—December 16, South Brighton; January 20, Waimairi: February 24. Sumner; March 10, Taylor’s Mistake.
