WELLINGTON.
The Government had not yet given a ruling on South Africa's participation in the
proposed Federation Cup women’s tennis tournament in New Zealand next year, said
the chairman of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association (Mr I. D. Wells) today.
Mr Wells told an executive meeting that a letter had been sent to the Government on July 24 explaining in detail South Africa’s tennis structure. “In many ways I feel that silence means consent,” Mr Wells said. New Zealand had to give full details of plans for the running of the Federation Cup tournament to the International Lawn Tennis Federation before its next council meeting in October. One of the conditions of New Zealand, being allocated the event is that it accept the
entry of every member nation. South Africa had agreed to hold mixed trials before picking its team to take part. The meeting tonight agreed to submit the dates December 16-24 of next year as the most suitable time to hold the tournament in New Zealand. But Mr Wells said that the association could not give the I.L.T.F. any final financial proposals until such time that lit received confirmation from I the Government that a South African team would be accepted in New Zealand.
