Pleasing returns
Although betting for the two nights dropped by $104,633 to $1,224,421, the Metropolitan Trotting Club could not be other than pleased with returns at its national meeting, which ended on Saturday. On-course bettting on Saturday rose by $13,707 to $251,959. Last year the club held the second night of the meeting on a Tuesday after two postponements. Off-course betting on Saturday was a respectable $449,839, compared with $498,521 on the mid-week night last year. On-course betting for the meeting was $471,349, compared with $461,991. Off the course the total was $753,072, compared with $877,063 when the club had no opposition on the first night. The crowd on Saturday was 7100, against 7300 last year.
