University head a woman
Dr Alice Rosemary Murray, aged 59, president of New Hall College, is to become the first woman vice-chancellor of Cambridge University. She takes office in October, 1975. Educated at Oxford she has been a chemistry don at Sheffield and Cambridge universties and served in the W.R.N.S. during the war. Dr Murray is the second woman in Britain to succeed to a vice-chancellor-ship. The first was Dame Lilian Penson, vicechancellor of London University from 1948 to j 1951.
