Record to Canterbury girl

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. The breaking of a New Zealand junior butterfly record, and two exceptionally close finishes were the highlights of the New Zealand winter swimming championships, held in the central pool, Invercargill, over the week-end. More than 90 swimmers from 10 provincial areas competed in the championships, which were held in the short-distance 33yd pool. The Canterbury swimmer, L. Rowe, clipped three-tenths of a second off the New Zealand junior women’s 100 yard butterfly record. Miss Rowe maintained lan early lead to finish almost two seconds ahead of her teammate. J. Chilton, in Imin 3.2 sec. The most exciting race was the men’s 100 yards freestyle, which went to A. Fogel, of Otago, whose time was 52.45ec.

The line of six swimmers remained even until the first turn, when B. Naylor (Southland) went ahead slightly. M. Johnstone (Waikato) and Fogel followed.

Fogel just managed to touch first. According to the stopwatch, Johnstone and Naylor touched at the same time but the judge’s decision for second went to Johnstone. The New Zealand representative swimmer, J. Parkhouse, showed the style that has made her a New Zealand champion in the women’s 100 yards freestyle, when she overcame strong opposition to win in 57sec.
