Time and Time Again. By Norman Simms. Caveman Press. 15 pp. (Reviewed by H. D. McN.)
Norman Simms is an American poet who has already published one book in New York; at the moment, he is teaching Medieval Literature at Waikato University, and his interest in cultural history is reflected in these poems. Simms is certainly not just another American poet, and he achieves some quite unique effects by juxtaposing archaic concepts with contemporary material. “Fire in New Orleans” begins: Lucifer fell headlong down, vaporous, to the icy lake of pain . . . and ends; while a foolish helicopter flits here and there, unable to be heroic, or to make hieratic bargains with the fire. Simms has recently been published in a number of New Zealand periodicals, and it is pleasing to see that he has not needed to reprint any of that work for this very interesting and cohesive little collection. The cover design is by Trevor Reeves, editor of “Cave.”
