SOUTHERN SOCCER Regional title is wide open
Last week, the Southern League soccer championship appeared to be a closed shop; this week lit is wide open again. The leader. Dunedin North .End, surprisingly went down, 1-2, to a rejuvenated Technical, in Dunedin; its challenger, Rangers, came from beihind to beat Shamrock, 3-2, • at English Park. Now. the gap between the two clubs has been narrowed
to three points, with Rangers having a game in hand.
VITAL MEETING Once more, the secondround meeting between North End and Rangers, in Christchurch, will be a vital fixture in deciding the championship and the southern region qualifier for the national league play-off series.
; Rangers took the lead with a | well-taken, opportunist goal by iA. Smyth, but M. Glubb equalised for Shamrock before halftime and D. Watson put Shamrock ahead shortly after the restart. Rangers put everything into attack to save at least a point and managed to get both, helped by goal-keeping errors. Smyth added his second goal and F. Versteg netted the winner. Woolston W.M.C., a candidate for relegation a few weeks ago, maintained its startling recovery with a victory over Western, and Technical advanced into the top half of the table with its win over North End. Results: Rangers 3, Shamrock 2; Roslyn-Wakari 1, Invercargill City 0; Dunedin North End 1, Technical 2; Queen’s Park 2, Mosgiel 3; Western 1, Woolston W.M.C. 2.
Results of qualifying competition matches were: Christchurch United Reserves 3, University 1; Halswell United 5, Nomads United 2; New Brighton 2, Burndale United 1; Northern Hearts 2. High School Old Boys 2; Rangiora 0, Cashmere Wanderers 3; Riccarton 1, Umaru Citv 1.
