As a 14-year-old runaway Miss Vecchio arrived a Kent State University, ii Ohio, where four student: were killed when Nationa Guardsmen opened fire dur ing student disturbances 01 May 14, 1970, after the in vasion of Cambodia b; American troops. Her photograph was taker kneeling beside one of th< four dead students, her arm: outstretched, and her moutl open in horror. The photo graph appeared on the covei of “Newsweek” and on from pages of newspapers through out the world. Miss Vecchio had returnee home after the Kent State incident, and resumed her ninth grade classes at junior high school, but later dropped out of school.
