HOCKEY SIDE

The former New Zealand player, K. Thomson, has been named captain of the Canterbury hockey team to defend the Challenge Shield in the Rothmans national men’s hockey tournament in Christchurch from August 19 to 25.

Canterbury will be without six of its top players who will be overseas with the New Zealand team in the World Cup. However, there is only one new cap in the squad, the Sydenham - Cashmere goalkeeper, M. Fitzsimmons. He will be deputy to D. Stuthridge. R. Best, who has been out of action for two months because of a broken arm, is included. The team is: Stuthridge, Fitzsimmons, N. Coster, E. A. Holstein, P. F. Clark, P. D. Ackerley, K. Thomson, G. Marshall, B. J. Aldridge, D. S. Small, A. Borren (vicecaptain), C. G. Maister, W. A. Thomson, Best and R. Bailey. Mr A. McCrorie will be manager and Mr C. V. Walter coach.
