U.K. women win cricket
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BIRMINGHAM (England). England won the first women’s cricket world cup when it beat Australia by 92 runs at Edgbaston. The Australians went into the match with a one-point advantage from their previous five matches in the round-robin tournament. But the home side proved too good. England scored 279 for three wickets in their 60 overs. Australia battled bravely but could not equal the English scoring rate and after 60 overs was 187 for nine. The Australian captain, Miriam Knee, will lead a composite world team — made up of players from Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies — against the English side. Rugby league.—Representative matches played in Greymouth at tlie week-end resulted: Under 14: Canterbury 32, West Coast 2. Under 9: Canterbury 6, West Coast 0.
