Women’s hockey title won by Harewood

After having forged ahead in the second half of the competition, Harewood emerged as the senior women’s hockey champion by four points when the final round was completed on Saturday.

’ The other positions in ■the grade remained close throughout, and jwere not finally decided juntil the last round. , In Saturday’s matches. Harewood beat Burnside — a team which showed great improvement in the second round. Carlton comfortably accounted for Cranmer, University beat Aranui. and Rawhiti was superior to Digbys. Grounds were in poor condition. and this has caused a number of unnecessary injuries in recent weeks. Results: Carlton 5, Cranmer 1. University 2, Aranui 1. Rawhiti 2, Digbys 0. Harewood 2, Bumside 0. Points: Harewood 12, Carlton B|, Burnside and Rawhiti 7|, University 6, Aranui 51, Digbys 5, Cranmer 4. EARLY GOAL Harewood began strongly, and scored its first goal after 15 minutes. The centre-forward. L. Schultz, netted and continued to show good form throughout the game. Play ranged up and down the field for the remainder of thel first half, with Burnside slow to settle and Harewood looking the) better team. In the second half. Burnside improved greatly and mounted continual attacks on Harewood’s goal. Various methods of attack were used, but no goal was scored. ’ On several occasions, Burnside looked certain to score, but some fine work in Harewood’s net bv J. Hamilton saved her team. Harewood slipped in the latter stages of the game and play be-

.came scrappy and haphazard; ■ until L. Schultz scored her : second goal. ) B. Turbott had a sound game jin Harewood's defence. Burn-; side's forwards all played well! jin the second half, but all, ; endeavours fell down at vital I moments. . ! Umpires: Mesdames D Copley and J. Wilson. PURPOSEFUL PLAY University would have been justly disappointed had the; result been any different as it had more territorial advantage, more purpose in its attacks, and a great number of corners. Aranui’s defence was sound and. although the forwards tried hard, gaps caused by injuries land absences were noticeable. ; University scored first, on Ihalf-time. The inside right. K. (McDonald, netted. There were: jno further goals till the last) 10 minutes of play. ; Aranui’s inside left, \V. Todd., equalised, but University went ahead again when its left-wing. D. Mullinder, netted an angled; shot. University had corners regularly throughout the second half, but scored from none of! these. The centre half, J. Galloway, covered territory well for University. All Aranui’s defensive players made some good moves under pressure, and while the forwards at times combined well, there were too many breakdowns in team work to cause play to flow for Aranui. I Umpires: Miss E. Ching and Mr )K. Chapman. AVENGED I In their last encounter. Cran- ; mer defeated Carlton convinciingly, but this time, the result I was reversed just as convincjingly. Carlton raced awav to a 14-0 lead before Cranmer gained : sufficient momentum to carry it ito definite scoring positions Carlton’s inside left, A Smith, found herself with plenty of field to work in, and she scored three goals. Cranmer can be relied on to play at a good pace, and the game was open and brisk. Carlton's right wing, E. Bannister, showed a good turn of speed and centred well.

) Cranmer’s A Liddell, at centre ’half, worked well, and S. JohnIson and P. Wright stood up to (Carlton's attacks at goal-keeper land left back, respectively. ! Scorers for Carlton were A )Smith (3), J. Wilson and E. j Clarke. S Pryor scored for I Cranmer. Umpires: Miss N. Beale and Mr : K. Chapman. DANGEROUS ATTACKS The first half of the match (between Rawhiti and Digbys was i fairly even, although Rawhiti Hooked more dangerous on atHack. C. Butts, the inside left, scored half-way through the first hall', ' and K. Sutton, the left wing, (added another. Play became (scrappy in the second half although Rawhiti attempted to I form a constructive pattern. Digbys made various breaks (down both wings, and several | corners gave it scoring chances, (but no goals resulted. The deI fence held well, with both backs I ,D. McKinnon and B. Green' Hackling accurately. in turn Rawhiti's backs. K. Marsh and IJ. Wright, broke up many attacks and cleared well. Umpires: Mrs M. McGregor and Miss B. Makinson.
