Positions abandoned

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PHNOM PENH, July 29. Phnom Penh’s defence perimeter contracted still further last night when Government forces abandoned Saang, their most important position south of the capital. Saang, on the banks of the Bassac River, is 16 miles south-east of Phnom Penh. The village of Baren, across the river from Bassac, and a number of other defence posts in the zone, were also evacuated. Military sources said that the posts were evacuated to strengthen Phnom Penh’s defences. The defence perimeter is now less than 13 miles from the city, and the whole region between the South Vietnamese frontier and the Phnom Penh region is virtually undefended.
