Trees, fountain for Square?

Men of the United States Navy Support Force at Christ church Airport have offered to provide several trees in the redesigned Cathedral Square: and the Christchurch Beautifying Association will arrange a public appeal to provide, a fountain. Commander R. G. Davis. U.S.N., wrote to the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) saying the trees would symbolise the growth of friendship between the American servicemen and the citizens of Christchurch. Thet' would also form a liv-j ing memorial to the men ofj all nations who had died in the pursuit of knowledge in. Antarctica. The Beautifying Association wrote that it was disappointed that a fountain had not been incorporated in the design. It had in mind a small fountain that would he paid for by donations from associations, business houses, and the public. The association would arrange a' public appeal.

Provision has been made by> the City Council for a power and water supply, and lastj evening it accepted the as-, sociation’s offer, subject to, the final design being approved by the council. Other council news in briefj was: Centennial Pool. — The main contractor was a little; behind the programme, but this should not affect the completion date for the Centennial Pool, the consulting engineer (Mr W. LovellSmith) reported. However, there had been serious difficulties with the supply of materials for mechanical services. It seemed that some delay in completion was inevitable; how much could not be assessed. The council; asked for a report on the , financial position of the con-; tract, and expressed a hope < that even if the contract was) not completely finished the: pool would be ready for use: at the beginning of the sum mer season. Declined. — An application by G. J. Roud and Son. Ltd,, to use a vacant section on' the corner of iVilsoqs Road !

and Ferry Road for vehicular; access to a timber yard was; declined. The town planning committee said the properties! in the immediate vicinity; were predominantly residen-; tial, and to allow the application would tend to perpetuate! an existing use which was; out of harmony with resi-i dential use and other uses permitted in the zone. Site for lifeboat.—Rescue, a 27ft lifeboat first used by the Sumner Lifeboat Institution and on permanent loan to the Sumner-Redcliffs Sea Cadet Corps for many years, may find a permanent home on land. The corps does not need the lifeboat any more, and proposed to the council that it should be preserved and put on displav on the Sumner foreshore. The council agreed subject to approval: of the site and the sponsoring; organisation being responsible! for the financing and main-' tenance. Licence granted. — The council granted a public building licence to the Pink, Pussycat Club (N.Z.), Ltd,; for premises in Tuam Street! to be used for entertainment: including a strip-tease club.

lAt the same time the council agreed to take legal action ' ! against Mr R. J. Hastie for, 'using the building without a' ; licence. ' Housing post.—Mr R. A. ;Schulz was appointed director of housing and property to! (succeed Mr M. W. Atkinson,! the deputy town clerk designate. Mr Schulz has been; with the property division for the last four years, is a qualified survey draughtsman, and is completing examinations for the urban valuer’s diploma. The council appointed Mr D. C. Duff senior property officer. Oak Grove. — The North New Brighton Residents’ Association had voted $2OO towards the cost of planting a grove of oaks at Queen Elizabeth II Park, the parks and recreation committee reported. It also wanted cab-; bage trees to be planted along Travis Road from Frosts Road to the Bower Avenue shops, and said that if the council did the plant-, ing the association hoped to, raise the finance. The coun-1 |cil agreed to this subject to! the sendee authorities concurring.
