Environmental committee
An advisory committee on urban environment was set up by the Christchurch City Council last evening.
It was charged with the responsibility of being a nonpolitical informed forum to give advice to the elected ! representatives and to study i the historic, social and economic conditions of Christ- ' church so that ail future environmental decisions were “based upon real knowledge.” Other terms of reference included study of Government decisions affecting the city, and to change the emphasis of city development from “a specialist strategy with independent conflicting viewpoints, to one of public demand for a richer social environment and greater value for money.” The committee was asked to make its first major report by July 31 next year, but authorised to make interim reports for public discussion.
Mr P. J. Beaven, an architect, will be chairman, and the occupations of other members are a professor experienced in land use, a social economist, urban geographer, business economist, local historian, lawyer, property developer, consulting engineer, artist, commercial photographer, and public relations consultant.
