Applications ; close August 3, 1973. -3861 THE UNIVERSITY OF PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA (PORT MORESBY) APPLICATIONS are invited for the following positions, ; available from January, 1974: DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER The appointee will be expected to combine research with teaching for about 12 contact hours per week. Most of this mav be to students in their preliminary and first undergraduate years. The main research being developed is into the physical processes relevant to agriculture taking place in the soil, plants and atmosphere. Applications from meteorologists with a physics background or from physicists working in the general area of fluid dynamics will receive special consideration. DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN FOOD CHEMISTRY Applicants should have a doctorate and appropriate teaching or other experience. The appointee will be expected to develop a unit in food chemistry relevant to the needs of a developing tropical country and there may be the opportunity to give extra curricular courses. An intention of the appointment is to further interdisciplinary links with Agriculture, Biology and Medicine. The Department hopes to develop research in nutrition and the analysis of food. The Department of Chemistry offers courses in organic and analytical chemistry; and courses in general chemistry for students of Medicine and Agriculture. Ihe appointee will also be expected to participate in the elementary courses in general chemistry. Research facilities are available. FACULTY OF EDUCATION LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN EDUCATION The Faculty of Education has accepted a responsibility for providing in-service training for experienced primary and secondary teachers to upgrade their qua ifications and to fit them for specialist posts in the Department of Education. A new diploma programme has recently been instituted: a two-year Diploma in Teacher Education designed to prepare those enrolled for academic staff positions in primary teachers colleges. Applications are invited from persons qualified to take charge of such a course. Experience in developing countries, qualifications appropriate to the diploma programme and a willingness to travel extensively within Papua-New Guinea would be desirable. LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN PSYCHOLOGY Applicants should have interests and qualifications in general experimental psychology, preferably with experience in developing countries. FACULTY OF MEDICINE TUTOR/SENIOR TUTOR IN HUMAN BIOLOGY The Department of Human Biology, within the Faculty of Medicine, is responsible for presenting an integrated course of instruction in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology to medical students during the second and third years of their training. . . ~ , . . An applicant who has a basic training directed towards either Biochemistry or Physiology/Pharmacology would be acceptable for this position, but preference will be given to an applicant whose training and experience encompass both fields. The research activities of the Department centre around disease susceptibility in relation to nutrition and cardiovascular function. Work is also cunehtly being undertaken on lipoprotein chemistry. This position is available immediately. SALARIES: Senior Lecturer: A510.119-$A11,734 per annum Lecturer: $A7304- $A9887 per annum Senior Tutor: $A6466- $A7134 per annum Tutor: $A5238- $A5906 per annum Plus a dependants allowance of SA36O per annum. (These salaries include an overseas allowance and academic salaries are currently under review.)
