Squatters may stay
j ] A family which moved into a Ministry of Works house in Barrington Street last month has been given permission to stay there until November 30. The Wilkie family, on the! authority of the Prime Min-1 1 ister (Mr Kirk), are allowed] 1 to stay in the house which] they occupied on June 16 without permission. They moved in with the ■ aid of members of the Tenents’ Protection Association after being evicted from their previous home. The publicity associated with their squatting drew the attention of the Minister of the State Advances Corporation (Mr Tizard) who referred it to Mr Kirk whose electorate includes Barrington Street. Mr Kirk wrote to Mr Wilkie authorising his family to continue occupation on the clear understanding that he enter into the usual tenancy agreement with the Ministry. The Ministry has written to Mr Wilkie asking him to conclude an agreement which will require him to vacate the j house by November 30 when it will be removed ahead of; motorway development »
