R.N.V.R. protest
The Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Canterbury) Association has condemned the Government’s “irresponsible action” in needlessly endangering the lives of the crews of H.M.N.Z.S. Otago and H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury, and their families, by its decision to confront France at Mururoa. This resolution was passed unanimously at the association’s monthly meeting this week., “Notwithstanding,” said the resolution, “ this association wishes to record with pride that the Roval New, Zealand Navy has done, and 1 will do. its duty in the manner which all British peoples have come to expect of their navies.” The resolution has been, sent to the Prime Minister : (Mr Kirk). A member of the R.N.V.R. for 42 years, Mr R. G.( Holmes, said last evening he; was most upset by the state- j ment. “I would dearly love to know who, or what percent-; age of the R.N.V.R. made a statement like that. The reason we founded the R.N.V.R. was to protfect New Zealand and to my mind this is what H.M.N.Z.S. Otago is doing,” said Mr Holmes, who rose to the rank of Petty Officer Leading Radio Mechanic during wartime service. “Certainly I would not like to be associated with the statement.” he said.
