SURVEY IN BRITAIN

Deprivation of coloureds

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, July 12. Coloured families in Britain live in worse housing conditions than immigrant Europeans and native whites, a Government-sponsored survey has disclosed. Nearly a quarter of all coloured households are overcrowded, compared with only 6 per cent of white households. The only families comparably deprived are those of Irish origin. One quarter of coloured households have to share a lavatory, and one in five, a bathroom. In both cases the figures are higher than for white families. More than one in 30 families where the head was born in a “New Commonwealth” country live in conditions so overcrowded that there is. on the average, one and a half persons or more per room — including kitchens and bathrooms where they exist. The survey project is a continuing one, designed to produce more information about the conditions and needs of people, and is being reported to seven Government departments.
