SHIPPING NEWS Arrival of new bulk carrier

Arrival day in a strange country is always busy for any vessel, but for Captain F. Surtees, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, master of the 15,871-ton (gross) bulk carrier Maersk Captain, yesterday was more hectic than usual because she was changing crew. The ship, which brought 24,000 tons of bulk phosphate to Lyttelton from Nauru, was commissioned in Norway only seven months ago. The Maersk Captain is owned by the huge A, P. Moller group, of Copenhagen, which controls well over 100 ships. One of three Moller vessels under the British ensign (the other two are the Maersk Commander and the Maersk Cadet), the Maersk Captain has a British complement of 27 men. The new Maersk Captain was built at Kaldnes (Norway). Hex' British crew, who have now served seven months in her, will fly from Christchurch to Britain today. Another crew, flown from Britain to Christchurch, is signing on now. This is a normal change roster. Shins’ crews fly all over the world today. The Maersk Captain’s officers are relieved at regular intervals, too. but not on this occasion. Captain Surtees said yesterday that his new command had visited Korea. Persian Gulf, South Africa and Australia since entering service. The 16-knct automated vessel is luxuriously appointed in the manner of most modern bu’k carriers seen at Lyttelton. The ship had a deadweight capacity of 24,500 tons, he said. She will discharge about 7000 tons at Lyttelton to lighten up—a normal procedure at this port—and will discharge the balance at Bluff. This company’s vessels, which have a distinctive light blue hull, are not seen in Lyttelton as frequently as formerly. The group includes bulk carriers, tankers, conventional cargo vessels and refrigerated vessels. Tn Cantain Surtees’s luxurious suite is a photograph of the company’s largest vessel, the Rasmine Maersk—whose dead-weight tonnage is 310.000—and the company’s smallest vessel, the Dangulf Maersk, whoso d»ad-weight tonnage is only 5000. These vessels are under the Danish flag, as is most of the group’s fleet. Captain Surtees, aged 47. was last in Lyttelton <n 1945 as an apprentice aboard the Clan Line’s Clan Colquhon.
