Wider scope for 6A

The 6A Trust Incorporated, which runs a youth centre in Madras Street, had decided to change the emphasis in its activities, the trust’s chairman (Mr D. McCauley) said last evening.

“Until now, we have spent most of our efforts running a drop-in centre and have found this has adversely affected other aspects of our programme, particularly in accommodation and the educational sides,” he said. “We plan now to use the building in Madras Street not as a drop-in centre, but as a site to provide accommodation and an educational and activities programme, with the accommodation section

physically separated from the rest of the activities there.” FIRM TENANCY The trust still saw the need for a place where its volunteers could make contact with the people the trust wanted to help, and it was investigating the possibility i of working with other organii sations which could provide [such a meeting place Mr McCauley said that the [6A Trust was fully committed to continuing work in the | old Nurse Maude headquarters in Madras Street.

Renovations were expected to begin next moith. When completed there would be accommodation for up to 12 persons and a live-in team of about four or five. Most of the ground floor would be given over to “more guided activities” than when the area was used as a drop-in centre. A committee of 6A was investigating these possible activities which would be recreational and educational. FULL-TIME WORKER Mr McCauley said that it was vital for 6A to employ a full-time worker to coordinate the activities at Madras Street. "We hope the Government will be able to give some financial help to allow us to employ such a person, but at the same time we are not going to sit back and wait for it. The employment of such a person is vital for the efficient running of 6A and fund-raising activities are to be directed towards this end,” said Mr McCauley.
