Trust policy on beer bottles

Sir.—l wish to draw your

attention to the attitude of

the Ashburton Licensing Trust on empty beer bottles.: These bottles are returnable, but the taverns at Tinwald. Mayfield and Hinds will not: accept them. Today I travelled from Hinds to Geral-l dine — where emoties are, bought — and back home, almost to Mayfield, some 40

miles, just to have my crates of empties replaced with full bottles. The other alternative seemed to be to dump the empties on the roadside or riverbed. I feel that the trust’s attitude over this matter is not serving the patrons and is a disservice to the whole community. Also it must account for Ashburton County’s roadsides being so littered with empty beer bottles.—Yours, etc., I. D. McKEOWN.

June 24, 1973. [Mr C. Moody, general manager of the Ashburton I Licensing Trust, replies: “The trust has operated for some i years now one central depot, the Moore Street premises in [Ashburton where empty beer and aerated bottles may be returned. However there are two full-time bottle collectors servicing Ashburton and Surrounding districts who are the recognised agents for the Associated Bottlers Company, and it is preferable that the collection of bottles be left to them.” |
