End for old power plant
A 70-year-old former Tramways Board power station in Falsgrave Street is being demolished to make way for an industrial development. The station has not been
used for about 15 years. The station was built about 1903 to provide electricity for the city’s original tramway network, and it came into use in 1905. After the Second World War, the power supply for the city’s trams was drawn from main electrical substations, but the tramway station was used intermittently, particularly during the winter, when it fed power into the main grid to boost the supply. When the station finally went out of use in the 19505, some of its equipment went to the thermal power generation project at Wairakei, and other equipment was sent to the West Coast. The station and the small area of land on which it stands was sold about two months ago. The land will be incorporated in an industrial development.
