Mr A. P. Boyle dies in U.K.

Mr Alistair Patrick Boyle, who died in London on Saturday after a short illness, was a director of the stock and station agency company of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, which he joined as a stock agent in 1928, and had a distinguished record in the Second World War.

Mr Boyle was born in Christchurch 68 years ago, and was educated at Christ’s College. He sen ed as a stock agent in Waimate from 1928 to 193 r . in Cheviot in 1930 and 1931, in Timaru from 1931 to 1934. and in Amberlev from 1934 to 1940. when he enhsted in the Arrnv. He was trained as an officer after he went into camp with the Third Echelon, and was commissioned before he sailed with the Fourth Reinforcements.

and they captured a German truck, which Lieutenant Boyle navigated through the German advanced lines to safety. Lieutenant Boyle was promoted to caotain and rejoined i Brigadier Kippenberger, who was commanding the Fifth ! Brigade, as brigade intelli- : gence officer. I He was badly wounded at Ruweisat Ridge and sent back ito New Zealand bv hosnitall I ship. When he recovered, he 'was posted to Trentham. and; ! lectured on military intelligence. LIAISON OFFICER Mr Bovle returned to the i Middle East in 1943, and 'joined the New Zealand 'Division’s headquarters staff.

He was posted by General Freyberg as liaison officer with Field Marshal Alexander’s staff, with the rank of major. For his services, he was mentioned in dispatches. After the war, in 1945, Mr Boyle rejoined Pyne, Gould, Guiness Ltd, as Christchurch manager of the stud stock de. partment. He was appointed a director of the company in November, 1945. and after his retirement from the company in 1958, remained a board member.

Mr Boyle bought marginal land at Oxford in 1958, and brought it into production.

He was elected to the Oxford County Council in 1965. and was a councillor until 1971. when he did not seek re-election. He was a member of the St Andrew’s Church vestry for many years. RACING INTEREST

Mr Boyle was keenly interested in racing. He was a steward of the North Canterbury Racing Club for 10 years and was elected president in September. 1971. He was also a member of the district committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference.

Two horses owned by him in partnership are still racing —Avvocato, an open-class sprinter which he raced with his sister. Mrs Janet Williams, and Triple, a two-vear-old with two placings out of four starts this, season, raced in partnership with Mrs Boyle and Mr C. L. Austin.

Mr Boyle was a member of the committee of the Christchurch Club.

During his visit to Britain, Mr Boyle called on his cousin, Lord Ballantrae, formerly Governor-General of New Zealand as Sir Bernard Fergusson. He had just returned to London from a week-end at Holyrood Palace when he took ill.

Mr Boyle is survived by his wife and three daughters.
