Korchnoi, of the Soviet Union, in an effort to score a grandmaster result in the inter-zonal stage of the world championships. Torre, who has scored 61 points from 13 games, needs two more wins and a draw to achieve such a result in the 17-round tournament, which will end on Thursday. But observers noted today that in the mia-game against the Soviet grandmaster, the Filipino was playing in a slightly cramped position. This might be ominous for Torre, who has so far. played better in open positions.:
