Pottery by Hamada

An exhibition of ceramics by the Japanese potter, Shoji Hamada, who visited Christchurch for the Arts Festival in 1965, contains 41 examples of his work, and is being displayed at the Robert Mc-i Dougall Art Gallery. The display was prepared! by the Christchurch potter, ! Rex Valentine, and is drawn j from work in public and pri-{ vate collections in New Zea-; land, including the Canter-j bury Museum collection. Hamada enjoys an inter-! national reputation as one of! the world’s greatest potters. In his own country, he has been declared a “national treasure.” Now aged 79, Hamada has played a leading part in reviving an interest in Japanese folk pottery production. In the 19205, he visited England and assisted Bernard Leach to establish the latter’s now famous pottery at St Ives. Apart from the brilliant decoration and the simple straight-forward shapes he employs, it is the humble presence of the man himself, contained in the purposely utilitarian objects he creates, that somehow becomes the abiding spirit of his work and the hallmark of his greatness. The exhibition will continue until the end of the month. —G.T.M.
