Grants for school camps
The Government ha offered State and privat [schools capitation grants t< help them provide schoo camps, the board of gover nors of Shirley Boys’ High School was told at its last meeting.
In a letter to the Canterbury Education Board read to the board meeting, the Department of Education advised that the Government had approved official recognition of the camps and a grant of 10c a pupil. The grant to pupils from Forms I to VII was effective from April this year. The money would be paid once an appropriate amendment to the Education Board Grants Regulations, 1973, had been issued, the letter said.
“The capital cost of setting up new camps will remain a local responsibility,” the letter said. “However, in appropriate cases education boards will be authorised to retain disused school buildings and suitable sites for school camp purposes.” The letter was read to the board without comment, but board members later discussed the possibility of using the Kowai Bush School which is being offered by the Canterbury Education Board to schools in its district. The seven-acre site has a classroom and some outbuildings and has been vacant for some time. No final decision was made.
