Close games in basketball
Canterbury basketbail teams had an excnmg encounter against the touring Tasmania Mersey vauey sides in the Cowles Stadium on Saturday evening wnen the province won a game by one point, then lost another by the same margin. In the main game, the Canterbury men s B side squandered many chances in losing to the Mersey Valley team, <3-44, and the province s women’s B team won its match, 34-33. Over all Canterbury lost the contest when the junior schoolboys were beaten by the Mersey Valley juniors, 20-10. The Canteroury men’s team should have won its game easily, but it threw away cnances with erratic shooting. The Tasmanian team capitalised on the mistakes and forced the game into an even battle. Canterbury scored 10 points to nil in the last three minutes, but the effort was too late and Mersey Valley won the close game. A. McCandlish was the best of the Canterbury attack, scoring 16 points, and R. Moore was sound in defence. In the women's game, both teams were not prepared to take silly shots and the game was played in a tight fashion. M. Williams (10) and E. Young (8) top scored for Canterbury, and P. Flynn and S. Constable played well both in defence and attack. An indication of the evenness of the teams was given when the half-time score was 14-13, with Canterbury leading.
Club beaten.— The French Rugby union club. Brive. beat Eastern Transvaal, 9-7, in the last match of its seven game South African tour at Springs. Rugby union.— The Italian national Rugby side was swamped, 42-4, by Rhodesia in the first match of its southern Africa tour in Salisbury.
