Girl falls on shingle

A police party driven in two utility vehicles and an Army ambulance went from Christchurch to the Porter’s Pass area last evening to bring out a 15-year-old girl who had been injured on a shingle slide near the Torlesse Hut.

The girl, Ann Steyaert, of 9 Trafford Street, Bishopdale, was climbing with a school party when she slipped and fell on gravel about 300 ft above the Torlesse Hut, at the northern end of the Kowhai River valley. She suffered facial injuries in the fall.

The area being accessible to utility vehicles, a police party left for the scene soon after 4 jj.m. and arrived at 10.15 p.m. The party was expected back in Christchurch about 2 a.m.. today.
