Railway dispute ends
The railway dispute which disrupted passenger and goods services in Christchurch since Thursday has ended.
Railcars to Picton and the West Coast ran on Saturday night and were running normally yesterday. Passengers going south on Saturday went by bus. The Railways Department district traffic manager (Mr A. D. Campbell) said he expected delays in the handling of goods traffic “for a few days” while backlogs were cleared.
Passenger services returned to normal almost immediately the dispute was settled.
A temporary agreement was reached in Wellington on Friday, and work officially began at 11.15 a.m. yesterday. The dispute, which began over the manning of the diesel refuelling installation for locomotives started last Sunday. On Thursday, members of the Engineers’, Firemen’s, and Cleaners’ Association refused to man locomotives.
