‘Problems’ in U.S.

Americans were very concerned about the future supply of fuels, Mr W. 0. Nicholson, a Christchurch businessman, told the Canterbury Travel Club. Mr Nicholson recently returned from a business trip to the United States, Japan, and Hong Kong. Mrs Nicholson, who is a Travel Club member, went with him. Americans were seriously considering an approaching time when the fuel for vehicles and machines would be something other than petroleum products, he said. They knew there were great supplies of oil in Alaska, but because of environmentalists these were as hard to get out as the oil in Arab lands. The Arab States controlled a large part of the world’s oil reserves. In the United States they had visited many beautiful homes, but had also seen something of the tragedy of life there. On several occasions they met people whose friends or relatives had been murdered. “This aspect of life is not taken lightly by the Americans,’’ he said. "Education was often expressed as the solution, but it is a difficult problem.” Golf.—Dannevirke is to have a one-day SlOOO sponsored tournament on the New Zealand golf circuit in mid-December. During a fortnight’s break between the Garden City Classic at Christchurch and the tournament at the Peninsula club, it is proposed one-day tournaments be held at Dannevirke, Hastings, and Maraenui (Napier).
