SHIPPING NEWS Big surplus of wharf labour

There was a big labour surplus (367 men), on the Lyttelton waterfront when work began yesterday morning, but 29 of these men were engaged to discharge the Dawn Grandeur’s Japanese cargo when she arrived for a 1 p.m. start. Initially only 186 men were engaged for daylight hours, and 30 for supplementary hours last evening. A weekly, printed, shipping and cargo information forecast, originated by the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s traffic manager (Mr J. B. Graham) several years ago, has proved a boon to all shipping affiliates and merchants. This forecast is prepared by the board’s assistant traffic manager (Mr J. B. Mitchell) with the co-operation of shipping agents. If present programming is maintained, the port should be busier after the week-end, Mr Mitchell said yesterday afternoon. st: * £•• A one-day call was made at Lyttelton on Wednesday bv the 2755-ton Norwegian motor vessel Wyvern, owned by Skibs A/S Karlander. Direct from Eureka (California), she discharged Oregon and Douglas fir lumber and a large quantity of white rum from Manzanilla (Mexico). The balance of her cargo is for Auckland. $ $ Now discharging canned produce (including beans and dog food) from Gisborne, the 911-ton Holmdale should leave Lyttelton for the Chathams tomorrow, after loading general cargo including hardware, foodstuffs, 10 vehicles, two dogs, possibly some passengers, and 1740 cartons of beer (20,880 bottles). This is a normal beer shipment. A spokesman said that over the years several million beer bottles must have gone to the Chathams but empties never came back. * $ * Flying the Somali ensign (“flag of convenience”) and registered in Mogadiscio, the 8877-ton, 10-year-old Dawn Grandeur arrived at Lyttelton from Wellington yesterday with 3000 tons of Japanese heavy cargo for discharge. including c.k.d. vehicles, polvthene, rubber, and steel. Owned by Man Cheung Yueng Shipping Company, Ltd, S.A., the IDawn Grandeur (formerly the Salvina owned bv Christian Salvensen of Leith), is commanded bv Captain J. C. Mark, of Hong [Kong. His wife is travelling (with him. The ship has a mixed [Chinese (Hong Kong) and PhilipI pine crew. Unfamiliar though the blue Somali ensign witli superimposed white star, may be at Lyttelton, many ships are registered under tliis flag. The 15-year-old company, which owns five ships, trades with North Korea, Japan, New Guinea, and elsewhere required, as in the case of the Dawn Grandeur. # $ # ARRIVALS ; Holmdale (7.29 a.m.), 911.
