PARTNER FOR TURNER? Openers fail to shine

(From R.

T. BRITTENDEN,

N.Z.P.A. special correspondent i

CAMBRIDGE. The partnership between J. M. Parker and R. E. Redmond which began New Zealand's game against Combined Universities at Fenners yesterday, did nothing to advance either for an opening batting position in the second test at Lord’s next week.

Parker failed twice in the first test, and Redmond, who has missed i he last three matches, I’aas a top score of 33 ■since the second game of the tour at Worcester. However, he was handicapped by his cantact lens troubles and a good performance here, followed by another in the next match against Warwickshire, might | well press his claims for a test place. LIVELY BOWLING I Yesterday, both were troubled by the lively leftarm bowling of R. Hadley, a I successful player for Glamorigan last year. He beat them with the new ■ ball, committing both to i strokes, and it was Parker who looked more fallible and ‘who missed more often. After these initial difficulIties, they batted soundly and ‘purposefully to score 40 be- ! fore Redmond, driving off the back foot, was caught at mid- ■ off. Parker, unfortunately, had a gross calling mix-up with B. F. Hastings and was easily run out. BURGESS ON TOP New Zealand made a cheerful 250 on a good pitch, M. G. Burgess top-scoring with an accomplished and relaxed 73 in 100 minutes. Hastings, V. Pollard and K. J. Wads-

worth chimed in with quick runs, but the captain for this match. B. R. Taylor, was out first ball to the vast amuse ment of his underlings. He played a sedate for ward defensive stroke but was not working on the same time scale as the bowler, to whom he returned t.n easy catch. NEW ZEALAND First innings R. E. Redmond e Lee b Khan 2! J.
