Chance for revenge
Seven members of the West Coast Rugby league squad chosen for the first of the Rothmans tournament home - and - away qualifying fixtures against Canterbury at the Show Grounds on Monday will need no reminding of the
result of the corresponding match last season. The props, J. D. Hibbs and W. Hargreaves, and the three Runanga clubmates among the backs, J. B. Low, W. K. Johnsen and D. J. Monk, were in the West Coast side that was thrashed, 45-9, at Christchurch a year ago. W. Balderstone, a reserve on this occasion, was also in the pack and A. P. Coll, who won World Cup selection a few months later, was the replacement forward. As a warm-up to the game at the Show Grounds, West Coast had beaten Wellington, 23-7, at home. This season Wellington again failed to relieve West Coast of the Rugby League Cup, 15-11, at Greymouth, but Canterbury’s confidence took a severe blow when it lost, 28-14, to Wellington last Saturday.
