The Scot, J. Stewart, in a Tyrrell Ford, took fastest time in the first practice session yesterday for the Monaco grand prix around the newly modified circuit.

Stewart was timed in Imin 28.5 sec for an average of 82.85 miles an hour, threetenths of a second ahead of the Swede, R. Peterson, in a JPS Lotus. The New Zealander. H. Ganley, in an Iso Marlboro, was eighth fastest, in lmin 30.6 sec, and his fellow countryman, C. Amon, in a Tecno, was tenth in lmin 31sec. The 25 drivers described the new section of five tight bends around the harbour front as greatly increasing the difficulties of the track.

“It is much more tricky, more tiring and very easy to smash a wheel,” Stewart said. “You have absolutely no let up at all now.’’
