FRENCH TENNIS

Top seed beaten

(N.Z.P A.-Reuter— Copyright) PARIS.

The Dutch professional, T. Okker, caused a major upset in the French international tennis championships yesterday when he beat the topseeded S. Smith (United States), the Wimbledon and World Championship Tennis title-holder. Okker won their fourthround men’s singles match in five sets, by 6-3, 3-6. 7-6, 3-6. 6-4. Smith was down, 1-2 in sets and 1-2 in games in the fourth set, when the match was resumed yesterday after rain had stopped an Okker in full flight on the previous dav.

The American fought back well to win the fourth set, and level at 2-2, but Okker regained the initiative in the decider.

The American girl, Miss C. Evert, reached the women’s singles semi-finals with a straight set win over Mrs H. Masthoff (West Germany). The score was 6-3, 6-3. R. Taylor (Britain), like Okker, led by two sets to one against another American, P. Gerken. Taylor so dominated the first t ?o sets that it is a wonder how he managed to lose the third set after being level at 3-3. In the only singles finished, Mrs M. Court (Australia) beat Mrs K. Ebbinghaus (West Germany), 6-2, 6-3, and P. Bertolucci (Italy) beat A. Ashe (United States), 7-6, 6-3, 6-4.
