CEMENT STRIKE
Many jobs in balance
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, June 1
The jobs of thousands of their members in the balance, trade union officials have called another meeting for Tuesday morning to discuss the strike at Wilsons N.Z. Portland Cement, Ltd. The 11 storemen and packers at the centre of the dispute have been urgently requested to attend. Their refusal to submit their pay claims to negotiation has brought work to a standstill on dozens of construction sites and has cut the supply of cement to Auckland at least 75 per cent.
The Auckland Master Builders’ Association will meet on Tuesday night to consider moves likely to result in thousands of building tradesmen being laid off.
The 11 men returned to work yesterday but then decided to strike again when the company' still refused to meet their demands.
