Invitation to Swedes
(NZP.A.-Reuter—Copyright) STOCKHOLM, June 1. The Minister of Trade (Mr Freer) has invited Swedish building tradesmen to emigrate to New Zealand, and has offered a “high standard of living” and free passage to any who want to make the trip. Mr Freer, in Sweden during a four-day visit for talks with labour leaders! and Government officials, said: “Our country is desperately short of workers," and that unemployment in New Zealand was less than 0.5 per cent. He said he would also study Swedish redevelopment projects. “In New Zealand the Government is embarking on a far-reaching redevelopment project, and we are interested in the Swedish model.”
In Wellington, the Minister of Immigration (Mr Colman) said that building tradesman immigrants from Sweden could help to reduce labour shortages in New Zealand’s building industry. He had discovered in recent talks with Swedish officials that Sweden had a surplus of building tradesmen.
