More Jackdaws
Every teacher will know the value of the folders of visual aids which Jackdaw Publications have been producing for a long time now. Their list now includes more than 150 titles on a wide range of fields, though with an historical bias. Each collection comes in a large envelope and includes large explanatory posters ideal for use on classroom walls and an assortment of documents (often facsimiles) suitable either for wall display or for passing round class as part of a lesson. Of recent additions, CHRISTMAS will have great appeal for primary school children, and includes some fascinating documents of Christmas through the centuries, as well as a play, some poems, and several cut-outs for children who are fortunate enough to have a copy to cut up. Also very suitable for younger age-groups are CLIPPER SHIPS AND THE CUTTY SARK, complete with an 1873 signal book and several plans, DAIRY FARMING, with farm plans, a construction model, and a world map, though the main emphasis is British, and THE MOTOR INDUSTRY, rather more specialised and with a strongly British bias. SCOTT AND THE DISCOVERY OF THE ANTARCTIC is a very interesting collection which will be useful at many levels, though it seems relatively thin in documentation. The secondary school will have most use for THE BRONTES (with an interesting leaflet on “The Brontes on Film”) and THE UNITED NATIONS. Finally, there is THE SOMME, which deserves attention for its fascinating documents and facsimiles of old newspapers.
