New sire from U.S.
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Long neglected by New Zealand breeders, the outstanding American sire, Gene Abbe, will be represented in the Auckland province by two of his sons in the approaching season.
It was announced several weeks ago that Wejover had been bought by Roydon Lodge Stud and would stand at P. N. McMillan’s stud at Matamata.
Also undergoing a period of quarantine in Britain at present is Hopalong Cassidy, which is being imported by Mr R. A. Owens, of Tauranga and will stand at J. K. Hughes’s stud at Pukekohe.
Gene Abbe, by Bert Abbe from Rose Marie, for a number of years has been the leading living sire of Individual winners in the United States. Last year, he was represented by 197 winners of 681 races and in 1971 his score was 215 individual winners of 768 races. He also headed the list in 1970 and 1969.
Hopalong Cassidy is out of Mary Wick, an unraced mare by Attorney. The dam of six winners, Mary Wick is out of Scotch Mary, by Scotland (sire of U. Scotti.
Hopalong Cassidy took a record of Imin 59 4-ssec and won nine races in a comparatively short career.
