CHOPPING WOOD AT 100
Mr Edward Christian Schwass, of Rotokohu, near Reefton, celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday. Born in Redwood Valley, Nelson, in 1873, Mr Schwass was one of a family of 11. His father, who was of German extraction, farmed in West Waimea for many years. Mr Schwass, who still enjoys a pipe and an occasional whisky, moved to the West Coast when he was 19, and has worked and lived there ever since.
For years he rose at 4 a.m., milked 20 odd cows, then did a day’s work in the bush, repeating the performance in the milking shed when he went home.
Mr Schwass still chops firewood in his own shed at the back of his son’s farmhouse at Rotokohu.
