I The Opposition Labour > I Party won two by-elections - yesterday to retain a pair of traditional party stronghold-. ■| The Labour candidate, Miss t Betty Boothroyd, almost •(doubled the party’s majority 1 in the 1970 General Election 1 (to take the Birmingham con•(stituency of West Bromwich. In the Lancashire constituency of Westhoughton in ’(north-west England, Roger J Stott of Labour had a majority of 6783 over the Conservative candidate. . The West Bromwich result ’ was regarded as a slap in the ( face for the ruling Conservative Party, which polled some ‘ill ,000 votes less than in the (last election. The swing to Labour was 9.2 per cent. In 'the Westhoughton result there was a swing to the Con- - servatives of .4 per cent. ? The results provided no r surprise because both seats , were traditionally Labour - and the Opposition party in . Britain invariably does well 'in mid-term elections.
