Making room for guests
The latest figures produced by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee show that a drive will have to be made soon to encourage thousands of Christchurch householders to offer accommodation to visitors during the Games. All E. available hotel and motel accommodation, except rooms which are being held for regular clients, has now been allocated to visitors who have bought Games tickets. Although ticket sales have been outstandingly successful, the Games are nine months away and thousands remain to be sold The organising committee is faced with the problem of calculating how many of those still intending to buy tickets will also need help in finding accommodation.
So far, the committee has been trying to avoid an accommodation problem by insisting that applicants for tickets disclose what arrangements they have made for their accommodation. Now that the usual commercial accommodation has been exhausted more and more applicants from outside Christchurch are likely to report that the are still seeking accommodation Host cities for previous Games have faced the same problem and accommodation in private homes has proved to be the solution. At the Perth Games this solution was found to be notably successful — and Perth’s resources of commercial accommodation were smaller than those of Christchurch today Equal success here will depend partly on a careful assessment of the number of visitors who have yet to buy tickets and who have not made private arrangements to stay in Christchurch: but it will depend most on the readiness of householders to take paying guests into their homes during the Games. Although Christchurch residents might eventually occupy unreserved seats at Games events, it would be regrettable if the occasion were not shared as widely as possible with visitors from other parts of New Zealand, and from abroad. The fuller meaning of being a host city will now have to be considered bv the citizens of Christchurch.
