Race visit cost ‘Miss World’ $5
Punters who lost money at the Amberley Racing Club’s meeting at Riccarton on Saturday were in beautiful company, if that is any consolation. “Miss World” (Miss Belinda Green) went down about S 5.
“I was betting in small lots and started to win, then lost it,” Belinda Green said on returning to her motel. “I am not much of a gambler, but we all had a great time.” Miss Green went to the races with the 12 "Miss New Zealand” contestants. One of her duties there was to make a presentation for the club to the rider, G. C. Mee, who won the Kowai Steeples on Distant Blaze. As a bonus he received a kiss from the international beauty queen. For the races the blueeyed, honey-blonde Belinda Green wore a bone coloured three-piece trouser suit with a chocolate brown felt hat, brown accessories and a red carnation. "I love a fresh flower to dress up a suit,” she said. The 21-year-old model has a flair for fashion, but does not go for “way-out” styles. “NOT A SQUARE”
"Nor am I a square,” she added. “I dress to please myself and for the occasion, not because I am ‘Miss World.’ I like to get into old jeans, kaftans or a long, casual skirt with a T-shirt to relax and romp around. But I love dressing up for a glamorous occasion, when I put every effort into it to give myself a lift and boost my morale.” As "Miss World,” Miss Green won $6OOO and might earn a further $lOO,OOO this year from personal appearances on tours. This may be more money than she ever dreamed of owning, but it has not turned her head.
“I shall invest it all till I need it,” she said. “There’s nothing I really want to buy right now.” The Australian girl who gave up studying accountancy to take up modelling because she believed it would give her better opportunities for overseas travel, has no' definite plans for the future.. She has turned down offers for film contracts.
“I think I’ll go back to modelling for a year when my commitments as ‘Miss World’ are completed. Excuse me for a moment . . .
Mum, the jug’s boiling,” she called out to her mother, Mrs Gwen Green, who is travelling through New Zealand with her. INDEFINITE FUTURE
"Now, where were we? Oh yes, what am I going to do. Well, eventually I’d like to get involved in television. I’d like to run a women’s programme and have complete control of it, to be able to
invite interesting people of' my own choice on u, j fashion advice on maternity wear and for over-weigm women as well as beauty' hints for housewives. I may; change my ideas about all I this, of course. I don’t really | feel secure about my future at present.” : One intention firmly fixed: in her mind is to travel morei extensively to see how others I really live. Since winning her title she has visited the Aleutian Islands, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Diego Garcia, Guam, and Los Angeles. In December she was in Vietnam with the Bob Hope Christmas Entertainment Special. "Of course, I love travelling the luxurv way,” she said. “But next time I go overseas, perhaps the year after next, I intend to rough it.” “Miss World” is sft 7in i tall, weighs Bst 41b and her measurements were 34-24-34 when she was crowned in, London. EXTRA POUNDS “But I would hate to measure myself now,” she said. “I’ve put on a few pounds—well, enough to keep me on my toes—with all this good living.” Of her New Zealand tour, she said: “It’s been fabulous. Especially the people we’ve; rtet. And it’s great to have Mum with me to share it. She had not been out of Australia before. 1 had not seen her since winning the contest until she met when we all arrived in Auckland.” No one could meet nicer girls than the “Miss New Zealand” finalists, not anywhere, according to Belinda Green.
"In fact, the whole ‘gang’ —the entertainers and all the others with us, are just fantastic,” she said. With that, “Miss W’orld” went off for a hot drink and to catch up on some sleep before her next appearance, on stage at the Theatre Royal with “the gang.” In the photograph Miss Green presents a silver ♦ray to the rider, G. C. Mee, at Riccarton on Saturday.
